A recently obtained recording from an internal training session at Tesla sheds light on how the company is addressing its workplace culture amid rising turnover and employee dissatisfaction. During a weeklong production shutdown at Tesla’s Austin factory — which manufactures both the Model Y and Cybertruck — employees who didn’t take paid time off were invited to attend cleaning and training sessions. Among them was a candid talk led by a Tesla training instructor, who acknowledged the negative experiences some former workers have had with the company.
"A lot of people leave this company, and they have kind of a negative taste in their mouth," the instructor said during the session. They noted that many ex-employees feel burnt out, unheard, or unable to make meaningful contributions due to constant change within the organization. The training, typically reserved for leadership roles, encouraged all staff to play an active part in shaping Tesla’s workplace environment. The instructor emphasized that while leaders carry more responsibility for guiding culture, the broader workforce ultimately reflects and defines it.
"You are the ones on the ground," they added. "Hopefully you can walk out of here with almost a different sense of purpose than just the job itself."
Tesla halted production at the Austin facility for the entire week of Memorial Day, allowing select employees to participate in maintenance and development activities. According to insiders, hundreds attended the events, including sessions focused on efficiency, safety, and cultural improvement. This rare public glimpse into Tesla’s internal morale efforts comes at a challenging time for the automaker. Recent financial reports show a 13% drop in vehicle deliveries, and the company continues to face scrutiny over Elon Musk’s political affiliations. Last week, Musk officially stepped back from his role in the Department of Government Efficiency to focus more on Tesla.
The training also touched on broader themes like company mission and teamwork, urging employees to think beyond daily tasks.
"We want you to think about the higher purpose," the trainer told attendees.
While Tesla has not yet commented on the leaked recording, the session highlights ongoing efforts to stabilize employee morale as the company navigates a turbulent market landscape.
